(The following article is courtesy of The Times-Picayune and nola.com) A Coach's Strength Shows in Adversity Jesuit's Bertot: Better next year Thursday, February 14, 2008 Pierce Huff Sometimes the true measure of a coach isn't what he does when he leads teams to championships, but what he does when he and his team fall short of winning title. Nobody would have blamed the Jesuit wrestling team if they crumbled after dropping from first place to 28 points back in third place after the Division I semifinals in the LHSAA state wrestling tournament last Saturday at the Pontchartrain Center. But Blue Jays coach Carlos Bertot has always told his team that state wrestling championships are won in the wrestle backs, and not just the championship bracket. With that in mind, Jesuit responded with five wrestlers finishing in third place, which helped it reclaim first place by nine points going into the championship matches. Jesuit finished second to Baton Rouge Catholic (214-210) in Division I. It was a momentous loss for Jesuit, because it marked the first time since 1983 that neither Jesuit or Brother Martin had won at least a share of the Division I title. It also marked the first time since 1988 that the Blue Jays or Crusaders didn't win the state championship outright. But no one can question Bertot's leadership of Jesuit when it mattered the most on high school wrestling's biggest stage of the season. Only a good coach can rally his troops when faced with failure. Only a good coach can get his players to focus on the big picture when the smaller picture seems so dark. That's what Bertot did at the state wrestling championships. The Blue Jays administration owes Bertot some gratitude for being a good example in victory and defeat this season. The Jesuit parents owe him thanks for teaching their sons how to overcome adversity. And the players owe him a pat on the back for being their mentor and their friend. I remember last year when Jesuit finished second to Brother Martin and had their streak of three consecutive Division I state championships snapped. Bertot looked me in the eye and told me things would be different the next year, and they were. The Blue Jays were arguably two state champion wrestlers away from winning the Division I title. When was the last time Jesuit did not have at least one state champion wrestler? (It's proof that fate was on Baton Rouge Catholic's side last weekend.) This weekend, Bertot, in his quiet, soft-spoken manner, told me again that things would be different for Jesuit next year. And I believe him. After all, the proof is there. Anyone can be a leader in good times, because that doesn't take much effort. But leading a team in tough times takes faith, perseverance and hard work. Anyone can coach a great team, because in a lot of ways great teams coach themselves. They have talented, smart and dedicated athletes who know how to win games. But not many people can teach good teams how to be great. The bar for the Jesuit wrestling team is set high every year, and for good reason. The Blue Jays are always contenders and are one of the state's winningest programs ever. The school has enough material from its championship wrestling banners over the years to clothe five different wrestling teams. But when the roll call of great Jesuit wrestling seasons is remembered in the future, this Blue Jays 2007-08 season deserves as much appreciation as some of the championship-winning teams of the past. And Bertot deserves his due. He kept Jesuit together in the face of adversity, and that gave the team a chance to win another state title even though it eventually fell short. And that's always championship coaching. |
At State Wrestling Tournament, Jesuit a Close Second Place to Catholic High Joe Cobena (171) hits the mat during his semi-finals match Saturday afternoon at the Pontchartrain Center. Cobena won his match and went on to win third place in his weight division.

The Jays were leading the Catholic High Bears by a mere nine points at the start of the final matches. Only two Jesuit wrestlers made it to the finals this year -- sophomore Jeffery Vitenas (103) and senior Michael Gruezke (135). Both gave it their best shot but lost their matches. Catholic High had five wrestlers in the finals and eventually pulled ahead of Jesuit.

By Pierce W. Huff For more than two decades the Division I state wrestling championship has been dominated by Jesuit and Brother Martin, as the last time neither had won at least a share of the Division I state wrestling title was in 1983 when Holy Cross won. The Division I championship has been won outright by the Blue Jays or Crusaders every year since 1988. During that span, the schools have alternated winning titles with one team going on a championship streak and followed by the other. But Baton Rouge-Catholic wrestled away Division I dominance Saturday at the Pontchartrain Center. With a clutch showing in the semifinals and finals, the Bears rallied to win the state championship. Jesuit finished second and Brother Martin finished third. The two-day tournament had a record attendance of 10,675, breaking the two-day mark of 10,042 set last year. Jesuit, which has won 14 state championships since 1988, had a roller-coaster ride through the tournament Saturday. The Blue Jays entered the day with the lead, but lost it and slipped to third place, before regaining it once more. Entering the championship matches, Jesuit led with 210 points, followed by Catholic (201), Brother Martin (186) and Rummel (170). But Jesuit only had two finalists, Jeffery Vitenas (103 pounds) and Michael Gruezke (135), and needed them to win their matches. Catholic had six finalists, and it needed to win most of their championship matches to have a shot. In the first Division I championship match, Vitenas, seeded second, lost to top-seeded Matthew Rabinowitz of Airline (9-1). Fourth-seeded Blake Savoie of Catholic defeated No. 3 Tyler Richardson of Brother Martin 9-4 to win the 112 title. Top-seeded Alex Hurst of Catholic defeated No. 2 Wesley Fernandez of Brother Martin 13-4 to win at 119. The result left the Blue Jays and Bears tied for the lead with 210 points. The Crusaders' Andrew Casadaban then kept Jesuit from winning the state team title when he defeated Gruezke 10-4 in the final at 135. "I didn't wrestle my best match," Gruezke said. Jesuit Coach Carlos Bertot said it was disappointing for the Blue Jays not to have at least one wrestler win a state title. "I knew we had some tough matches going in," he said. "Vitenas had lost to Rabinowitz before, and I was hoping he could pull out a close one. Gruezke wrestled and gave it 200 percent." With the Blue Jays out of wrestlers in state championship matches, all Catholic needed was for one of its three remaining wrestlers in the finals at 145, 152 and 171 to win an individual title to give the Bears the state championship. Comeaux's Zachary Saucier defeated Catholic's Benjamin Carroll 6-4 at 145. But second-seeded Trent Fresina defeated No. 1 Bernie Dupuy of Rummel 6-4 at 152, and the result gave the Bears 214 points, surpassing Jesuit's 210. "In any wrestling tournament, there is always the chance that you may not be at your best," Gruezke said. The Blue Jays went 2-6 in the semifinals, while Brother Martin and Catholic each went 6-1. Rummel was 4-3. That gave the Bears a two-point lead. "It was disappointing for us (dropping to third)," Bertot said. "I think some guys didn't wrestle well." But in the wrestle backs, Jesuit's Jonathan Dupre (112), Gregory Veech (119), Gerard Braud (130), Joe Cobena (171) and Shane Delery (285) finished third. The result put the Blue Jays back in the lead going into the finals with 210 points, followed by Catholic (201), Brother Martin (186) and Rummel (170). "It's the same thing I've been telling the team all year: You win state in the wrestle backs," Bertot said. Gruezke said his teammates showed a lot of heart to wrestle Jesuit back into the lead. "It showed the true fight we have," he said. "It showed that once we're down, we will fight back." But Jesuit couldn't hold on to the lead in Division I. 2008 LHSAA State Wrestling Tournament Jesuit Individual Results Jeff Vitenas - State Runner-up (Second) @ 103 Jonathan Dupre - Third Place @ 112 Greg Veech - Third Place @ 119 Boe Reboul - Fifth Place @ 125 Gerard Braud - Third Place @ 130 Micheal Gruezke - State Runner-up (Second) @135 Lee Redfearn - Fourth Place @ 140 Patrick Keiffer - Fifth Place @ 145 Stephen Vocke - Fifth Place @ 152 Spencer Sticker - Sixth Place @ 160 Joe Cobena - Third Place @ 171 Bat Brunner - Fifth Place @ 215 Shane Delery - Third Place @ 285 The Blue Jay wrestling team finished as state runner-up to Catholic High of Baton Rouge with a score of 214-210.

Jesuit Wrestling Team Continues Quest for State Title Jesuit senior wrestlers, from left, Joe Cobena, Lee Redfearn, Patrick Keiffer, Boe Reboul, Greg Veech, and Michael Gruezke will lead the Blue Jay wrestling team to the state tournament.
For details about the state wrestling tournament, visit the LHSAA Information Page. (The following article is courtesy of The Times-Picayune and nola.com) Jays Take Early Lead at Wrestling Tourney Martin still 'within striking distance'
Saturday, February 09, 2008 By Pierce W. Huff Jesuit senior Joe Cobena said Blue Jays wrestling coach Carlos Bertot usually talks a lot to the team before its matches. But he didn't say much before the LHSAA state wrestling tournament Friday. Jesuit has waited a year to redeem itself after finishing second to rival Brother Martin last season, failing in its bid for a third consecutive Division I state title. And after the Blue Jays defeated top contenders Brother Martin, Rummel and St. Paul's and won the Catholic League title in the past three weeks, Cobena said Bertot instinctively knew that the Blue Jays were ready. The Blue Jays continued their late-season momentum by taking the lead in Division I on the first day of the two-day tournament at the Pontchartrain Center. The tournament resumes today at 9 a.m., and the finals are at 6:30 p.m. Jesuit has 107.5 points, followed by Baton Rouge-Catholic (98), Brother Martin (96.5), Rummel (95.5) and Mandeville (76). In Division II, Northside leads with 106, followed by St. Michael (101) and Shaw (96.5). Brusly leads Division III with 101 points, followed by Basile (58) and Redemptorist (50). The Jesuit wrestlers who advanced to the semifinals are Jeffery Vitenas (103), Jonathan Dupré (112), Boe Reboul (125), Gerard Braud (130), Michael Gruezke (135), Lee Redfearn (140), Stephen Vocke (152) and Cobena (171). The Blue Jays had more semifinalists than any other Division I teams, but they lost five quarterfinal matches. Redfearn, Vocke and Cobena each were fourth seeds. Redfearn defeated Baton Rouge-Catholic's Drew Boatner 5-2, his fourth victory against Boatner this season. Vocke defeated Brother Martin's Patrick Shine 1-0. Cobena defeated Rummel's Jonathan Schneider 6-5. The Brother Martin wrestlers in the semifinals are Tyler Richardson (112), Wesley Fernandez (119), Nick Shields (125), Reed Hart (130), Andrew Casadaban (135), Ben Dussouy (171) and Justin Loehn (189). The Crusaders lost two quarterfinal matches. "It was a crazy, up-and-down day for us," Brother Martin Coach Matt Lambert said. "We're hanging tough and keeping in the mix. We're still within striking distance." Rummel's semifinalists were Mark Pinero (119), Johnny Calcote (130), Tony Suarez (140), Mike Budde (145), Bernie Dupuy (152), Peter Morreale (160) and Travis Burke (189). Baton Rouge-Catholic advanced seven wrestlers to the semifinals. Mandeville sent five. Jesuit's victories the past few weeks gave the Blue Jays a confidence boost going into the state tournament. "I think we're starting to peak at the perfect time," Cobena said. Jesuit entered the tournament with only one top seed, Dupre. But the Blue Jays had 10 other wrestlers with top four seeds. Jesuit was in first place after the first session with 45.5 points, followed by Baton Rouge-Catholic (43.5), Brother Martin (36), Rummel (34) and Mandeville (29). Thirteen Blue Jays advanced to the quarterfinals in the 14 weight classes. "I think after the first round, we all felt great going into the quarterfinals," Redfearn said. Baton Rouge-Catholic advanced 12 of 15 to the quarterfinals. Brother Martin and Rummel advanced nine to the quarterfinals. Shaw sent nine wrestlers to the semifinals, which was the most of any team in Division II. The Eagles did not have a losing wrestler in the quarterfinals. The strong semifinal showing keeps Shaw in the mix for the Division II state championship. Meanwhile, Jesuit hopes to ride its momentum to its fourth state title in the past five years. Cobena said Bertot's decision not to give a big speech Friday spoke volumes to him and his teammates. "We could tell he felt comfortable going into the tournament," Cobena said. Jesuit might avoid another long pre-match speech from Bertot today as well.

Blue Jays Nab 10-5A Wrestling CrownJesuit dominates, wins eight weight classes Sunday, January 27, 2008 By John Giambelluca Jesuit dominated the District 10-5A wrestling tournament Saturday at Rummel.
The Blue Jays scored 187.5 points to outdistance Brother Martin at 104. Rummel was third at 102, and Chalmette was fourth with 37.
Jesuit won matches in eight classifications. Rummel had five winners and the Crusaders one. Greg Veech of Jesuit won the most competitive match when he defeated Wesley Fernandez of Brother Martin 5-3 in overtime at 119 pounds. Veech tied the score at 3 late in the third period and won in overtime with a successful counter move against Fernandez.
"Fernandez defeated me at the Lee High Tournament and at our dual meet," Veech said. "I knew I could beat him, but I had to be in the right mental frame. When I trailed 3-2 late I had lost my composure, but I regained it when I heard my teammates urging me on."
The Blue Jays won the first four matches, including pins by Jeffrey Vitenas and Johnathan Dupre in the first two matches.
Vitenas pinned Kevin Blaise of Rummel at 29 seconds of the first round at 103 pounds. Dupre pinned Ryan Duvernay of Rummel at 1:35 of the first period at 112.
Patrick Fitzsimmons completed Jesuit's fast start when he defeated Rhett Ernst of Rummel at 125. "Our goal is two win the final two tournaments of the season," Jesuit Coach Carlos Bertot said. "We have been working in getting our lineup set, and it is coming along. We wrestled well today."
Johnny Calcote of Rummel won at 130 pounds, defeating Garard Breaud of Jesuit 13-6.
Jesuit's Michael Gruezke won a technical decision against Jason Puente of Brother Martin. Gruezke led Puente 16-0 when the match was stopped at 2:22.
Mike Budde of Rummel defeated Lee Redfearn of Jesuit 4-2 at 140 pounds. Budde led Redfearn 4-0 late, but with 30 seconds left Redfearn scored a takedown to trim the deficit to 4-2. Budde held on for the victory.
Travis Burke of Rummel pinned Justin Loehn of Brother Martin win 1:15 left in the first round to win the 189-pound class.
"I caught Loehn off of his game today," Burke said. "I caught him in a reversal, threw him on his back and was able to pin him." Tony Suarez of Rummel defeated Shaun Dunn of Brother Martin 10-5 to win at 145. Bernie Dupuy of Rummel pinned Steven Vocke of Jesuit at 4:33 to win at 152. |

Win on a Pin in Chilly Gentilly! Blue Jays Edge Crusaders in Dual Wrestling Meet Blue Jay senior Patrick Keiffer (145) pins his Crusader opponent. The fall was pivotal for the Jays in winning their Wednesday night dual meet against Brother Martin in Gentilly.
Jesuit-Bro. Martin Wrestling Meet Photo Gallery
At the end of 14 exciting, breathless, and ferocious wrestling matches between the Blue Jays and the Crusaders in Brother Martin’s Conlin Gym on Wednesday evening, it all came down to one lonely pin, courtesy of senior Jesuit wrestler Patrick Keiffer.
Jesuit and Brother Martin each scored 27 points, requiring referees to determine the winner on “criteria.” Since neither team had any technical violations, the next criteria is the number of matches each team won. The Blue Jays and the Crusaders split the 14 matches evenly with seven wins apiece. This required referees to examin the third criteria -- the number of pins awarded each team.
The rules of wrestling call for forfeits to be counted as pins. Brother Martin won the last match of the evening when senior Boe Reboul reinjured his shoulder, causing him to forfeit his match. Score one pin for the Crusaders.
Jesuit’s Jeff Vitenas (103) won his match by forfeiture. Score one pin for the Jays. And score a second winning pin when Jesuit’s Keiffer trumped his opponent with a crucial takedown that shook the floor of the gym.
With their two pins, the Blue Jays were declared the winner of the dual meet.
“It was a nailbiter, a total team effort across the board,” said Jesuit wrestling Coach Carlos Bertot. “I think the pivotal match was, obviously, Patrick Keiffer’s -- pinning his opponent was just terrific. Since it was only the third match, Patrick’s win really got our guys pumped up.” (The following article is courtesy of The Times-Picayune and nola.com) Brunner Lifts Blue Jays Jesuit Tops Martin in Warmup for State
Thursday, January 17, 2008
By Pierce W. Huff
Jesuit junior Bat Brunner was smart.
Brunner was outweighed by 60 to 65 pounds in his match against Brother Martin heavyweight Trent Kropog on Wednesday. So, Brunner did the only thing he could do -- he moved around as much as he could, tried to steal as many points as he could without a lot of contact, and then moved around some more.
It wasn't pretty, but it was effective, as Brunner defeated Kropog 7-3. Brunner's victory was indicative of Jesuit's effort in its dual-meet win at defending Division I champion Brother Martin. Both teams finished tied at 27, but the Blue Jays won the match on a tiebreaker because it had two pins to Crusaders' one. "I wish it wouldn't have come down to that criteria, but a win is a win," Jesuit junior Patrick Kiefer said. The Blue Jays' pins were by Kiefer, who pinned the Crusaders' Sean Dunn at 3:58, and Jeff Vitenais, who won by a pin when Brother Martin forfeited at 103 pounds. The Crusaders' pin came came in the final match at 130 pounds when Nick Shields defeated Beau Reboul, who forfeited because of a shoulder injury. Jesuit had a 27-21 lead going into the final match. Shields' victory created the tie. "We could have held Reboul out that match, but he's a senior and he wanted to wrestle Shields," Jesuit Coach Carlos Bertot said. The Blue Jays won two of the first three matches and led 9-3. But the Crusaders came back to take a 14-12 lead when Justin Loehn defeated Nico Pantazis 11-2 to 189 pounds. Jesuit reclaimed the lead when Philip Zanco defeated Garret Dawson 8-2 at 215. Then, Brunner upset Kropog at 285. "When someone gets on top of you and they outweigh you by a lot, you don't want to be in that position," Brunner said. "I had to use a lot of movement, or his weight would wear me out." Jesuit increased its lead to 27-14 when Jonathan Dupre defeated Tyler Richardson 8-3 at 112 pounds. "Some of our guys didn't get the job done," Brother Martin Coach Matt Lambert said. The Blue Jays led 27-17 with two matches remaining after the Crusaders' Wesley Fernandez defeated Greg Veech 5-3. But the 10-point deficit meant that Brother Martin needed to win the last two matches by pins to win the meet. The Crusaders' Reed Hart defeated Patrick Fitzsimmons 14-6 at 125, then Shields won the last match. "I'm definitely proud of my guys," Bertot said. "Brother Martin shuffled their lineup. They put Shields at 130 when he normally wrestles at 125, and put Hart at 125 when he normally wrestles at 130. It didn't work because Hart didn't pin our guy." Both teams used the match to get in shape for the upcoming state tournament. Jesuit-Br. Martin Dual Results
