(The following article is courtesy of The Times-Picayune and NOLA.com.) Cubs, Blue Jays make waves State championships atone for last season Sunday, November 19, 2006 By Tammy Nunez SULPHUR -- Last year the New Orleans swimming family was assessing damage after Hurricane Katrina, but this year the house has been gutted and refurbished to its former glory. Jesuit and Mount Carmel bounced back to form, winning Division I state titles Saturday at the SPAR Aquatic Center. Neither team was able to defend its 2004 title last year. Mount Carmel was closed because of Katrina in 2005, and the Cubs didn't swim in the state meet. But Mount Carmel debuted its reunited squad with much fanfare, winning with 377.50 points. St. Joseph's Academy finished second with 295 points, and Northshore (243) was third. Being back on deck in a Mount Carmel swimsuit meant as much as hoisting the trophy. "It's probably the most emotional experience I've ever had in my life," senior Laura Bailey said. "Just because of what happened last year -- we were all at different schools -- and being able to unify again so well." Bailey won the 50 freestyle in 25.02 and finished second to Northshore's Colleen Donovan in the 100 freestyle in 55.44. The Cubs stacked up points with the efforts of Alexandra Gonzalez, Alyssa Barré, Ashley Aranda, Lauren Broussard and Jennifer Broussard. Bailey, Aranda, Jennifer Broussard and Barré teamed for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.71). The strength in numbers also worked for Jesuit. It was much needed after a grim 2005 season. Only 12 Blue Jays swam in 2005, trying to maintain Jesuit's streak of 18 consecutive titles -- the longest streak in any sport in LHSAA history. But Jesuit lost by a handful of points to Catholic. Jesuit won its 32nd swimming championship Saturday with 463 points, outscoring second-place Catholic (296) and third-place Rummel (194). It couldn't come soon enough for Blue Jay senior Garrett Malbrough, who said he has awakened every morning since last November thinking of atonement. "It's meant so much to us after what happened last year," Malbrough said. Junior Blue Jay John Tortorich won the 100 butterfly in an automatic All-American time of 50.77 seconds. The Blue Jays swept the 50 freestyle. Michael Collins ’07 won in 21.79, Brandon Harvey ’08 (22.05) finished second and Marc Dorsey ’10 (22.16) finished third. Brian Carr ’10 won the 500 freestyle in 4:47.70 and finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:47.40). The Blue Jays' 400 freestyle relay team of Tortorich, Malbrough, Brandon Harvey, and Michael Collins won with an All-American consideration time of 3:14.40. Marc Dorsey won the 100 backstroke (53.44), and Malbrough (54.19) came in second.

Hurricane Katrina closed one door and opened another for Jesuit’s swim team. Yes, the Blue Jays’ 18 year dominance of Class 5A swimming came to a close last year when Catholic High of Baton Rouge captured the state title; but now the 2006 Jesuit swim team has the unique opportunity to begin a new streak in Louisiana prep swimming. This prospect began this week when the Jays participated in two swimming duals. On Tuesday, September 19th, the Jays dominated the Northshore Panthers to win the first match of the season. On Thursday, September 21st, the Jays travelled to Vanderbilt Catholic to compete against the Terriers. Once again, the Jays were victorious earning 106 points to Vanderbilt's 64. The results of Thursday's meet against Vanderbilt are as follows: 200 Medley Relay: First Place- Marc Dorsey - Michael Collins; Garrett Malbrough - Brandon Harvey 400 Free Relay: First Place- Christ Staudinger - Garrett Malbrough; John Tortorich - Jared Rodrigue 200 Free Relay: First Place- Michael Collins, Marc Dorsey, Ramsey Burch, Brandon Harvey 200 IM: First Place- John Tortorich 200 Free: First- Jared Rodrigue, Third- Chris Willem 50 Free: First- Brandon Harvey, Second- Marc Dorsey 100 Free: First- Michael Collins, Third- Ramsey Burch 500 Free: First- Brian Carr, Third- Napoleon Benoit 100 Fly: First- Garrett Malbrough, Third- Jared Rodrigue 100 Back: First- Mark Dorsey, Second- Brian Carr 100 Breast: First- Michael Collins, Third- Brandon Harvey
Although the Jays appear to be in good shape, returning to old form will not be easy for Jesuit. First, the natatorium at the University of New Orleans remains closed; so the team has been preparing for the season at a new venue, the Beach Club in Metairie. Also, the Jays are a young team stacked with freshmen and sophomores.
With all this youth, senior leadership will be critical for a successful year. Senior captains Michael Collins and Garrett Malbrough along with seniors Kyle Bradford and Chris Staudinger welcome the challenge to lead the Jays back to victory.
