Jesuit (3) vs. Rummel (1)
Saturday, January 17, 2009 -- Rummel Field

Junior mid-forward Patrick Mullins feels the pain during Jesuit’s hard fought soccer match
against Rummel on the Raiders’ narrow, bumpy field.

Sophomore Stephen Cabos tussles with a Raider.

Senior Richard Caverly gets his head in the game.

Junior defensive back John Barbara eyes the ball.

In a nifty two-step routine, senior defensive back Colin Sens attempts to reclaim the ball.

Junior forward Patrick Culotta uses his body to effectively shield the ball
from a Raider.

One of the anchors of Jesuit’s defense is senior Michael Simmons.

Close, but no score: What makes Jesuit so difficult to defend against is the ability of the Blue Jays
to turn their corner kicks into goals. Flanked by junior John Barbara (13) and Patrick Mullins (18),
senior Trey Kramer (9) expresses his exasperation at a missed opportunity on a corner kick.

Senior Chris DeRojas (35) heads the ball as junior Alexis Petrou stands by ready to help.

Midway through the first half, Patrick Mullins drills a free kick from about 25 yards out
that sizzles like a hot potato and slips through the hands of the Raider’s goalie
to give the Jays a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The support of Blue Jays in the stands is always inspirational to the Blue Jays on the field.

At halftime, Coach Hubie Collins (far right) tells his team they need to score quickly when the
match resumes to break the game open and provide a level of comfort for the Jays.

Senior Mark Reuther follows up a kick and almost charges
into the Raider goalie. Early in the second half, Reuther
slaps a shot over the Raider’s goalie and into the net
to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead, along with
that level of comfort.

With a Raider hanging on, senior forward Daniel Moise finesses a chip shot over
to teammate Marc Reuther (31).

Senior Ryan Cabos is a picture of concentration.

The Blue Jays flood the goal area on a Raider corner kick. Helping to clear the ball out are,
from left, juniors Larry Stansberry (28) and Patrick Culotta (21),
and seniors Marc Reuther (31), Trey Kramer (9), and Ryan Cabos (3).

Junior defensive back Jordan Schwartz wants the ball, not a Raider hand.

After receiving a pass from his brother Stephen, senior Ryan Cabos deftly drills a shot
into the net for the Jays’ third and final goal of the match.

Feeling pretty good about themselves and a comfortable 3-0 lead, the Jays celebrate
Ryan Cabos’s goal. In addition to Ryan Cabos on the left and brother Stephen on the right are,
from left, juniors Jordan Schwartz (15), Patrick Mullins (18), and
Patrick Culotta (21), and senior Mark Reuther.

Backing up Blue Jay senior goalie Stephen Andrieu are Jesuit defensive players,
from left, Richard Caverly and Trey Kramer.

Junior forward Brandon Cohen finds himself wedged between a couple of Raiders
and ever so close to the goal.

Sometimes the only way the other team can slow down Patrick Mullins is to tackle him.

Rummel scored a consolation goal late in the match
when this ball snuck by back-up goalie Ryan Power.

Jesuit’s team physician, Dr. Joe Licciardi ’53, wraps the sore shoulder
of j
unior forward Alexi Petrou in a soothing layer of ice.
