District Football: Jesuit (28) vs. Shaw (37)
2009 Homecoming Game - Tad Gormley Stadium
Saturday, October 24, 2009

The referees and the Jesuit coaches and players stand for the National Anthem.

Handling the coin toss at mid-field for the Blue Jays are seniors Taylor Bologna (44),
Blaine Perkins (20), Justin Parker (69), and Kenneth Bourgeois (60).

Junior running back Dylan Richard finds daylight and sprints toward the end zone,
putting the Jays first on the scoreboard.

The ensuing kickoff is flubbed by Shaw and recovered by this happy quartet —
junior Bobby Dunn (23), sophomore Rhett Reynolds (3), and juniors
Ryan Nunenmacher (2) and LeRoid Jones (33).

With three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Jesuit adds a second touchdown and goes
up 14-0. Senior quarterback Ethan Oddo finds senior wide receiver Brycen Koch
three steps in front of his defenders and wide open in the end zone.

Shaw’s junior running back, Lawrence Breaud, was an elusive and slippery target all night long
for Jesuit’s defense. Double-teaming Breaud on this play were Blue Jay linebackers
sophomore Deion Jones (40) and senior Jordan Lewis (80).

Senior quarterback Ethan Oddo looks downfield to complete a pass.

Senior running back Gary Langlois (26) goes on defense and tries to bring down
Shaw’s strong safety who moments earlier picked off an Ethan Oddo pass.

Junior tight end Joey Tuminello hauls in a pass from Oddo giving the Blue Jays a first down.

Jesuit head football Coach Wayde Keiser is not timid about expressing his displeasure
to a referee over a questionable call. With three minutes remaining in the second quarter,
the Eagles kicked a field goal to take a 17-14 lead. Two minutes later, Shaw scored their
third touchdown (missing the PAT) to take a 23-14 halftime lead.

Homecoming sends the spirits soaring among enthusiastic Blue Jays.

While the fans enjoyed the Homecoming activities during halftime, the Jays regrouped in
their locker room. Returning to the field for the start of the second half, they were
pumped and focused on the task that lay ahead.

Senior offensive lineman Joey Giglio (52) moves an Eagle out of the way to clear the runway for
sophomore running back Paul Stanton (19).

Seven minutes into the third quarter, Ethan Oddo connects on a 17-yard pass to senior
wide receiver Alex Hritz, who made a leaping catch just inside the back of the end zone.
The touchdown and PAT cut Shaw’s lead to two points, 23-21.

The touchdown reinvigorates the Blue Jay defense. Junior defensive lineman Grant Leger (53)
joins seniors Charles Stewart (18), Austin Nichols (30), and Andrew DeGenova (92)
in bringing down an Eagle after a short gain.

Jesuit junior safety Anthony Militello wraps up
Eagle wide receiver Garret Shano. With just over
11 minutes left in the game, the Eagles widened their
lead, 30-21, when they scored a touchdown.

Senior running back Gary Langlois (26) steers offensive lineman Joey Giglio into a
gaggle of Eagle defenders on his way to pick up some yardage.

Senior tight end Joshua Dudley makes a leaping catch for a first down and
goal on Shaw’s one yard line. Two plays later, Dylan Richard
bulldozed his way into the endzone, making it a two-point
game once again, 30-28. However, with four minutes left
in the game, the Eagles scored a touchdown. The 37-28 score
held up for the remainder of the game, although the Jays did
not give up until time expired.

On Jesuit’s final possession, junior offensive lineman Matthew Andry (75) tries to stop
an Eagle from broadsiding Blue Jay quarterback Ethan Oddo,
who gets rid of the ball in the nick of time.

Sophomore running back Paul Stanton can’t get a grip on an Oddo pass.

The Jays go for it on fourth down, but cannot convert, turning the ball over to the Eagles.
On the play, Oddo was hit pretty hard and is helped to his feet by senior linemen
Matthew Andry (75) and Kenneth Bourgeois (60).

Blue Jays and Eagles meet on the field after the game...

... then join the fans for the Alma Mater.

The Jesuit student section is somber and seniors Adam Lahoste, Derek Dunham, Paul Smith,
and Jack Zeringue reflect on what very well could have been a different outcome.

Coach Keiser congratulates his players for not giving up, but also tells them that mental
m
istakes and penalties result in what is called “coming up short.”

The look on the faces of seniors Jordan Lewis (80) and Andrew DeGenova (92) says it all.
