Jesuit High School provided the “blue and white carpet” treatment for prospective students and their parents who learned about the Blue Jay Spirit and the school’s rich traditions of academic, extracurricular, and athletic excellence at its exciting Open House Wednesday night.

Current junior and senior Blue Jays served as guides for three separate tours that began at 6, 6:45, and 7:30 p.m. Now in its 160th year as a Catholic, college preparatory school in New Orleans and ideally anchored in the heart of Mid-City at Carrollton and Banks since 1926, Jesuit continues to fulfill its mission by developing in its students the competence, conscience, and compassion to be men of faith and men for others.

Renowned as a center for academic excellence, Jesuit has 38 National Merit Semi-finalists in the Class of 2008, the most of any high school in Louisiana. Additionally, Jesuit has five National Hispanic Scholars and one National Achievement Semi-finalist. On the athletic field, the Blue Jays have a tradition of winning championships, and Jesuit hopes to build on last year’s four state titles in cross country, swimming, soccer, and baseball.

When the entire first floor of the school was inundated with more than five feet of rancid water following Katrina, the Jesuits quickly completed emergency repairs and welcomed back hundreds of displaced Blue Jays on Nov. 28, 2005, becoming the first New Orleans high school that sustained catastrophic water damage to reopen on its home campus. A $12 million reconstruction project was completed earlier this year.

“Tonight’s Open House gives prospective Blue Jays the unique opportunity to personally scrutinize many of our greatest strengths and traditions and to discover why we say that Jesuit is the school that will change your life,” said Jack Truxillo, Director of Admissions.

In addition to the 400 seniors and juniors who served as tour guides and ambassadors, Jesuit’s 110 teachers, numerous parents, and many local alumni were on hand to welcome future Blue Jays and their parents and to answer questions about what makes Jesuit... Jesuit.

Blue Jay Spirit, Renovated Facilities on Display for Prospective Student at Jesuit's 2006 Open House

Open House at Jesuit Wednesday evening brought out hundreds of prospective students, including
(in the photo above) two 7th graders from St. Clement of Rome. Alex Johnson (left) and
Jeffrey Decorte experienced some Blue Jay Spirit as they toured Jesuit with their mothers,
Ann Johnson (left) and Nancy Decorte.

Open House at Jesuit High School is always a special time. Alumni return to help faculty, staff,
and current Blue Jays with the myriad activities that take place at Open House. The lights in
the Hall of Honors beckon one towards the class photos that date back to 1927. Jesuit's rich
160-year-old history shares center stage with a newly renovated first floor, which was destroyed
by the great Katrina deluge.

Prospective students and their families had the opportunity Wednesday evening to discover
first hand Jesuit's academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs. They were among the
first visitors to see the newly reconstructed first floor, including the auditorium, cafeteria,
restrooms, Student Commons, classrooms, athletic facilities, and the Blue Jay Shop & Bookstore.

Open House afforded prospective students an opportunity to ask lots of questions
about high school life on Carrollton and Banks.
