Class of 2009 Produces 35 National Merit Semifinalists


Jesuit High School has 35 National Merit Semifinalists in the Class of 2009.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recognized 35 seniors from Jesuit High School as semifinalists in the 2009 Merit Scholarship Competition, representing the largest number of honorees from a Louisiana school and the largest number of semifinalists among Catholic schools in the U.S., according to data provided by the NMSC.   

Jesuit’s honorees make up 15% of Louisiana’s 227 National Merit Semifinalists who come from 54 schools. The outstanding performance of these 35 Blue Jays ranks Jesuit among the top 30 public and private high schools in the United States.

Two seniors -- Alula Amare and Ian Cannon -- were named semifinalists in the 2009 National Achievement Scholarship Competition. Jesuit also has five seniors who are National Hispanic Scholars, including Andres Begue, Nicholas Chedid, Arthur Collins, Andrew Debram, and Andrew Puente.

Additionally, Jesuit had 14 seniors who were commended in the 2009 National Merit Program. They are: Tyler Andrews, Andres Begue, Ian Cannon, Arthur Collins, Peter Flores, Daniel Hoppes, Patrick Kiernan, Robert Klare, Cullen Landry, Joseph Ory, Andrew Puente, Sean Simonson, Charles Tiblier, and Joshua Trusheim.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recognized 38 seniors from Jesuit High School as semifinalists in the annual Merit Scholarship Competition. The honorees of the Class of 2008 gathered in Jesuit’s Traditions Courtyard for this photo.

Additionally, one Jesuit senior, Thurgood Burks-Coats was recognized as a National Achievement Semifinalist, an academic competition for outstanding African-American high school students.

 

Five Jesuit seniors were also recognized as National Hispanic Scholars. They are: Diego Aviles, Garrett Brown, Frederick Debram, Joseph Morse, Jr., and Marco Salgado. Aviles, Morse, and Salgado are also National Merit Semifinalists.
