| Class of 2009 Produces 35 National Merit Semifinalists
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recognized 35 seniors from Jesuit High School as semifinalists in the 2009 Merit Scholarship Competition, representing the largest number of honorees from a Louisiana school and the largest number of semifinalists among Catholic schools in the U.S., according to data provided by the NMSC.
Jesuit’s honorees make up 15% of Louisiana’s 227 National Merit Semifinalists who come from 54 schools. The outstanding performance of these 35 Blue Jays ranks Jesuit among the top 30 public and private high schools in the United States.

| Blue Jays Soar at 2009 District and State Literary Rallies Blue Jays enjoyed another solid performance at both the district and state literary rallies. At the District Rally held at the University of New Orleans in March, eight Jesuit competitors were overall winners in their discipline, while sixteen Blue Jays won first place. At the 2009 State Literary Rally held at in Baton Rouge on the campus of Louisiana State University, five Blue Jays placed first, with four students recognized as overall winners in their discipline. | 62 Blue Jays Honored as 2008 AP Scholars Jesuit’s AP scholars-- 62 in total-- hail from the Class of 2008 and also from Blue Jays in the Class of 2009.

| Blue Jays Earn National Distinction on Latin and Greek Exams Congratulations to the Blue Jays who participated in the 2009 National Latin and Greek Exams sponsored by the American Classics League. In the National Greek Exam, 95% of the Blue Jays earned a ribbon for the efforts. This percentage far exceeds the national average of 55% In the National Latin Exam, Blue Jays merited 199 awards, including 55 gold medals.

| Best in State and On to Disney World! Varsity Quiz Bowl Team to Represent Louisiana in National Tournament Jesuit’s varsity quiz bowl team won the 2009 state title and earned the honor to represent Louisiana at the national competition held at Disney World this summer.
On their way to claiming the state championship, the quiz bowl team -- Taylor Hillburn (standing, left), Jonathan Coote, Kanwal Matharu (Captain), Nicholas Chedid, Coach Ron Rossi, James Burvant (kneeling, left)and Daniel Cooper -- went undefeated in tournament play.

| Jesuit's Mock Trial Team Wins 2009 State Title; Set State Precedent at National Mock Trial Tournament
The Jesuit Mock Trial Team won the State Championship in Monroe, Louisiana, on Saturday, March 21st . They will represent Louisiana in the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 7 - 10. At the national competition in Atlanta, Georgia, the Blue Jays finished seventh place, to this date, the best performance of any Louisiana team which has competed at the tournament. The team that competed at State consisted of Andres Begue, Alex Cerone, Robert Semmes, Michael Mentz, Jamie Flanagan, and Chip Arnold. The coach is Mr. Brett Wise,’82. |

| Blue Jays Take Second at 2009 Mu Alpha Theta State Competition This spring in Baton Rouge, Jesuit’s team took second place overall at the MAO convention, a math competition against the best students in Louisiana.

 Freshman Jacob Pritt took second place in the Lincoln- Douglas debate at the state tournament.

Blue Jay Takes Second at State Debate Tournament Jesuit’s debate team travelled to Lafayette High School to compete at the LHSSL Tournament of Champions, which is the state tournament for Louisiana debaters. While William Simoneaux, Alex Hotard, Ed Wu, Nick Falba, and Scott Tilton each won individual awards, freshman Jacob Pritt placed highest among the team, winning the second place medal in Lincoln-Douglas debate. His victory capped a very successful year that saw him defeat the reigning national champion in debate, as well as achieve more awards than any other freshman debater in the history of the forensics program. | Return to End of the Year Review Home Page. |
