Chess

Jesuit's Philelectic Society will perform the popular 80's rock musical by Tim Rice and the creators of ABBA beginning March 12. The cast, led by seniors Nick Otts, Samantha Martin (Academy of the Sacred Heart) and sophomore Drew Lambert, is well into rehearsals for this musical extravaganza. This highly acclaimed musical develops the ancient and distinguished game of chess into a metaphor for romantic rivalries and East-West political intrigue during the Cold War.

The principal pawns are a love triangle: the loutish American grandmaster, the earnest Russian champion and the Hungarian-American female chess second, who arrives at the international championships with the American but falls for the Russian.

From Bangkok to Budapest the players, lovers, politicians, CIA and KGB make their moves to the pulse of this monumental rock score. Several numbers, including "One Night In Bangkok" and "I Know Him So Well" are international hits. With music by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (two members of the hit group, ABBA) and lyrics by Tim Rice, Chess has a style all of its own, and quite unlike any musical which has gone before. It varies from hard rock to soft ballad, sometimes within the space of a single scene, and there are plenty of moments when a more classical style shows through.

Chess runs March 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 7:30 and March 14 at 2:00 in the newly renovated Jesuit High School auditorium. Tickets are $12.50 for reserved seating, $10 for general admission, and $5 for Jesuit students. Tickets go on sale Monday, March 8, in the side lobby of the Jesuit auditorium. Tickets will be sold immediately after exams from March 8-12 and from 12:10 to 1:00 and 3:00-3:30 March 15-19. For reservations, e-mail Phils@jesuitnola.org. For further information, call 483 3877.
