One Hundred Fifty-seventh Year
Commencement Exercises

Two hundred seventy-seven seniors of Jesuit High School were awarded diplomas by the Rev. Anthony McGinn, S.J., president of the school at Commencement Exercises in the school’s one hundred fifty-seventh year, Friday, May 21 at the Municipal Auditorium.

Reverend Father President’s Spiritual Leadership Award is awarded to the student who has exerted the greatest spiritual influence on others by living a life exemplifying his Catholic faith. The President’s Spiritual Leadership Award is given to that member of the senior class who manifests to the rest of the school community his dedication and commitment to Christ and the Church through his personal life, concern for others, and Christian example. If, in the judgment of the administration and faculty, no senior has lived up to the criteria of the award, it need not be given. By vote of the faculty, this year’s award was merited by: Richard Baker Jones. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Walker Jones, Jr. of New Orleans.

The Harry McEnerny, Jr., Memorial Plaque is awarded to that member of the senior class who has a good scholastic record, has participated in extracurricular activities, and possesses those qualities which symbolize the most representative Jesuit High School student. He should be a leader among the students and his leadership should be in the area of preserving school spirit. The student who has been judged deserving of this award by a vote of the faculty is: Jason Patrick Thompson. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Riley P. Thompson of Slidell.

The Father Pedro Arrupe Award is made each year to the senior who has exemplified the spirit of being a man for others by his participation and excellence in service. This year, by vote of the faculty, the Father Pedro Arrupe Award is merited by Niels Vass Johnsen. He is the son of Mr. Erik L. Johnsen of New Orleans and Mrs. Leslie Wallace of Metairie.

Valedictorians of the class of 2004 were Christopher Theodore Bucher, Jr., Gerald Joseph Daigle III, Joseph Michael Lefante, Eugene Dayton Settoon, and James Anthony Villarrubia.

Christopher T. Bucher, Jr. is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher T. Bucher of Kenner, Louisiana. He will attend Rice University where he will study pre-med . He was also accepted to Georgetown University (Honors College, Bellarmine Scholar, John Carroll Scholar), George Washington University, Boston University (Honors College), Fordham University (Honors College), Tulane University (Honors College), Southern Methodist University (Honors College), Wabash College (Honors College), Louisiana State University (Honors College), and Vanderbilt University. He was awarded the Fordham University Presidential Scholarship, George Washington University Presidential Scholarship, Georgetown University Bellarmine Honorarium Scholarship, Louisiana State University Alumni Association Scholarship, Louisiana State University Chancellor's Student Aide Award, Louisiana State University TOPS Honors Award, Southern Methodist University Dean's Scholarship, Southern Methodist University Rotunda Award, Tulane University Distinguished Scholars Award, Tulane University TOPS Honors Award, Vanderbilt University National Merit Finalist Scholarship, Wabash College President's Scholarship, Wabash College Wabash Action Grant, Boston University University Scholarship, National Merit Scholarship, and a Rice University Merit Scholarship.

Gerald Joseph Daigle III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald J. Daigle, Jr. of New Orleans, will attend Pomona College in Claremont, California, where he will study philosophy, politics, and economics. He was also accepted to Washington University in St. Louis. He was awarded a National Merit Scholarship.

Joseph Michael Lefante is the son of Dr. and Mrs. John J. Lefante, Jr. of New Orleans. He was accepted to Tulane University (Honors College), Duke University, and Rice University. He will attended Tulane University (Honors College) where he will study engineering. He was awarded a National Merit Scholarship, Tulane University Distinguished Scholars Award, and Tulane University TOPS Honors Award.

Eugene Dayton Settoon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Settoon of Kenner, Louisiana, was accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Texas A&M University, Cornell University, Princeton University, Tulane University, Louisiana State University, University of Florida, and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he will study electrical engineering. He was awarded the Lindenwood University Wrestling Scholarship, Louisiana State University Alumni Association Scholarship, Louisiana State University Chancellor's Student Aide Award, Louisiana State University TOPS Honors Award, Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, Texas A&M President's Endowed Scholarship, Tulane University Distinguished Scholars Award, Tulane University TOPS Honors Award.

James Anthony Villarrubia, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm H. Villarrubia of Metairie, Louisiana, will attend the University of Virginia where he will study mechanical engineering. He was also accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Tulane University, Purdue University, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Louisiana State University, and the University of New Orleans. He was awarded the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering Olin Scholarship, Georgia Institute of Technology Presidential Scholarship, Knights of Columbus Catholic Youth Leadership Award, Louisiana State University Alumni Association Scholarship, Louisiana State University Centennial Award, Louisiana State University Chancellor's Student Aide Award, Louisiana State University TOPS Honors Award, Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT Scholarship, National Council on Youth Leadership, National Merit Scholarship, Purdue University Academic Success Award, Tulane University Deans' Honor Scholarship, Tulane University TOPS Honors Award, University of New Orleans Chancellor's Scholarship, University of New Orleans TOPS Honors Award, and the University of Virginia Jefferson Scholars Award.
