Head basketball coach Chris Jennings congratulates tournament MVP Elijah Morgan for the well-deserved honor.

For the first time since 2009, the Jesuit Blue Jays were crowned champions of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tournament. The Jays defeated Holy Cross, 64-54, on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the finals match-up in the Birdcage. A second-quarter flurry of three-pointers gave the Jays a 14 point lead at the half. Despite an aggressive Holy Cross effort in the second half, Jesuit held its ground to clinch the school’s 12th CYO tournament championship.

Elijah Morgan (#10) was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament after his 16-point and 4-steal performance. The Jays had made their way to the finals by defeating Slidell, 59-49, on Friday, Nov. 30.

The Friday night victory came after a pair of wins in pool play on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 27-28. On Tuesday, the Jays defeated St. Stanislaus, 82-38, shooting 52% from the field and forcing 31 turnovers from the Rock-A-Chaws. The Jays came home to the Birdcage on Wednesday night to outscore Fontainebleau 26-3 in the 2nd Quarter on their way to a 75-42 victory. Morgan was the leading scorer for the Jays in both contests.

Jesuit’s roster also had increased depth throughout the tournament with football players joining the team for the first time this season.
