Head coach Bret Hanemann ’85 is relying on 20 Blue Jay swimmers and a little luck to reclaim the state championship trophy that was last theirs in 2012.

The team left on a bus this morning heading to Sulphur where it will compete in the LHSAA Division 1 State Swim Meet. Competition takes place on Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21 at the SPAR Aquatic Center.

Coach Hanemann is optimistic about his team’s chances. “Anything can happen on any given day. This team is always in the hunt and we’re going to go for it.”

In last year’s state meet, Jesuit challenged Catholic down to the final races of the meet, finishing just 28 points behind. The Blue Jays are eager to recapture a title that has barely escaped them the last couple of years.

Coach Hanemann – in his 20th year of coaching Jesuit swimmers – and assistant coach Tré Roux ’87 will be counting on senior Cade Fuxan, who won an individual state title in the 100-yard butterfly last year, and juniors Josh Armond, Jack Jackson, and Noah Wilkins. They’ll also be watching freshman Davis Edwards, who finished first in the 500 free at the Metro Meet. Hanemann thinks Edwards has the potential to finish first in Sulphur. All three of Jesuit’s relays are among the state’s fastest, as well.

Two awards are guaranteed. Seniors Felix Rabito and Brady Stiller will be honored as Academic All-State.

“We have some really good leadership,” Hanemann said. “If we leave it all in the pool like we did last year, and with a little luck, we absolutely can bring the state trophy back to Carrollton & Banks.”
