Jesuit congratulates 2015-16 All-State band members Jae Kweon ’16, William Fine ’17, Leo John Arnett ’18, and Christopher Vuong

Four Jesuit bandsmen representing four separate grade levels have been recognized as all-state musicians. The honorees are senior Jae Kweon, junior William Fine, sophomore Leo John Arnett, and freshman Christopher Vuong.

To qualify for all-state distinction, students auditioned first at the district level in September. Those who made it through district competition moved on to a second round of auditions. Those took place on October 10, in Lafayette, where finalists from all nine districts from around the state competed for all-state recognition.

Students are required to play scales and prepared pieces of music. They are also asked to sight read, which involves receiving an unfamiliar piece of music, reviewing it for thirty seconds, and then playing it for the judges.

The All-Staters come together in Baton Rouge to practice as a group the weekend of November 21, and prepare for a concert on Monday, Nov. 23.

Kweon, Fine, and Arnett are playing in the All-State Symphonic Band. Vuong is a member of the All-State Concert Band. Arnett and Fine are percussionists, Kweon plays alto saxophone, and Vuong is a trumpeter.

Both Fine and Vuong were chosen as first chair for their respective instruments. Kweon is playing in the all-state band for the third consecutive year.

The Jesuit Band is moderated by Messrs. Joe Caluda ’79 and Jason Giaccone.
