Debate Team Gets Solid Start to Year

Jesuit-Debate TeamThe Jesuit Debate Team competed at its first tournament of the year, the Holy Cross Navy and Old Gold Debate and Speech Exhibition, on Oct.2-3. The University of New Orleans campus hosted the tournament, which drew hundreds of high school competitors from 11 different states to New Orleans.

In Lincoln Douglas Debate, sophomore Robert Cerise recovered from two early losses to reel off six straight victories, eventually reaching semifinals and taking home the third place trophy. Along the way, he beat the top speaker and top seeded debater at the tournament.

In Public Forum Debate, the team of juniors Jaime Colon and Andrew Souther had a solid first tournament as a team, advancing to quarterfinals of the tournament and placing fifth.

The Debate Team’s next tournament is at St. James School in Montgomery, Alabama on October 9-10.
