Jesuit’s second day score was better than its first, but not good enough to take one of the top spots at the Division I Boys’ State Golf Tournament. The news was better in individual play where junior Grant Glorioso took home a state runner-up medal.

The eight-team event took place on March 4 and 5 at Farm D’Allie Golf Club in Carencro.

The Blue Jays shot a 311 on Tuesday, 15 strokes better than the 326 they recorded in Monday’s opening round. Three of Jesuit’s five finalists lowered their scores on Tuesday. 

Grant Glorioso went from a 78 to 70, while classmate Carlo Carino dropped six strokes, from an 84 to 78. Freshman Grayson Glorioso, who shot an 86 on Monday, tallied a 78 in the final round of the 2014-15 season. Sophomores Sean Donovan and Nolan Lambert posted scores of 85 and 90, respectively, giving the Blue Jays a two-day total of 637. Freshman J.T. Holmes was the team alternate.

C.E. Byrd of Shreveport claimed the LHSAA Division I Boys’ state championship with a two-day total of 596. Catholic High of Baton Rouge finished as state runners-up with a score of 611. Barbe High of Lake Charles finished in third position with 623. Jesuit’s 637 placed them fifth.

“I thought we pressed a little too hard on Monday before settling down and playing more relaxed on Tuesday,” said head coach Owen Seiler ’75. “Overall it was a great learning experience for our young men that will make them better down the line. Considering that all of our guys are eligible to return next year, I am very excited about the future of Jesuit golf,” he added.

Jesuit qualified for the state event by finishing first at the Division I – Region II Tournament in Springfield. The Jays shot a 305 on the David Toms course at Carter Plantation on April 29.

The individual state champ is Byrd sophomore Philip Barbaree — an LSU signee — who finished the tournament with a score of 141. Barberee is the first Louisiana golfer to win consecutive Division I individual titles since Jesuit’s Myles Lewis won three in a row from 2008-2010. Lewis, a member of LSU’s golf program, missed out on a fourth state title by a single stroke.

Grant Glorioso, who tallied a two-day total of 148, and Catholic’s William Myers finished as co-runners-up.
