Sheridan Moran, a former collegiate and high school wrestling champion who has coached for the past five years at the LHSAA’s Division 1 level in Baton Rouge, has been named head coach of Jesuit High School’s wrestling program.

The announcement was made by Jesuit principal Peter Kernion ’90, who on Tuesday introduced the new coach to Blue Jay wrestlers.

Since 2011, Moran has taught biology, chemistry, and physical science to students at Catholic High in Baton Rouge while also serving as an assistant varsity coach at the school.

Moran will make the move to the New Orleans area this summer to assume his new responsibilities with Jesuit wrestling, widely considered one of the most respected and acclaimed prep programs in Louisiana.

At Jesuit, Moran will teach biology to freshmen Blue Jays and take over the wrestling program from current head coach Spencer Harris ’89, who announced last month that he planned to leave at the end of the school year to spend more time with his family.

“Sheridan brings practical experience and a professional presence to both the classroom and the wrestling mat,” said Kernion, adding that Moran “will be a positive influence on our students as he contributes to fulfilling the mission of Jesuit High School.”

Moran is a 2005 graduate of Lafayette High School, where in his junior year he was an individual state wrestling champion. In his senior year at the LHSAA state tournament, Moran was in the finals but lost to a Blue Jay. The 7-6 decision in triple overtime remains a frame of his competitive life that he vividly remembers.

Moran wrestled on the collegiate level, first at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) before transferring to Newberry College in South Carolina where he earned a bachelor of science degree as well as recognition as an All-American NCAA Division II athlete.

“I am very excited about being part of the Jesuit family and leading a program that is steeped in tradition,” said Moran. “When I think of Jesuit High School, the word ‘excellence’ immediately comes to mind. I want to continue with that tradition.”
