Senior Myles Blunt Throws 3-Hitter to Earn 2nd Shutout Win

Myles Blunt went the distance of 5 innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 4, to pick up his second shutout win of the young season.

In Jesuit’s home opener at John Ryan Stadium Tuesday afternoon, the Blue Jays and Vandebilt Catholic from Houma took about three innings to size each other up, much like sumo wrestlers circling each other. After three innings of circling, Jesuit held a tenuous 1-0 lead.
 
One inning later, in the bottom of the 4th, the Jays’ bats exploded for 9 hits that produced 8 runs, and Jesuit had this non-district game firmly in their gloves. The game ended early, in the bottom of the 5th, when the Jays, leading 9-0, scored another run, which triggered the 10-run rule.

The Jays had 15 hits and were led by a host of players. Seniors Alex Galy (SS) and Dan Edmund (1B), and junior Brandon Briuglio (2B), each had two hits, including a double. Seniors Scott Crabtree (3B) and Ben Hess (RF) each had two singles; Crabtree also had 2 RBIs.

“I just think early on we were not patient, we showed not enough discipline as we’d like,” said Coach Joey Latino. “But I think after we got through the lineup once and got a second look, I thought we did a better job of staying back and getting better pitches to hit.”

Senior pitcher Myles Blunt allowed only three hits, struck out four Terriers, and notched his second shutout of the young season.

“Our pitching has been really solid,” said Latino. “We got another good outing today from Myles, just throwing strikes and letting our defense play. We’re getting timely hits when we need them. We just gotta keep working. Right now we’re early in the season, still a lot of baseball to be played, and we still have a lotta things we need to work on.”

What does it say about nine different players with 9 RBIs?

“Well, today it says a lot of guys contributed and that’s something you always want to see,” said Latino. “We’ve got some areas where we obviously need to get back to work. And we’re gonna do that tomorrow. We’re going to stay squarely focused on the process and not so much on this result.”

The Jays host the 3rd Annual Jesuit Invitational Tournament, a three-day competition among eight teams that begins Thursday, March 5. Jesuit plays its four games at the Ryan (see schedule below), including a double-header to end the tourney on Saturday.
