The Blue Jays’ 2015 baseball season is underway.

Jesuit’s varsity baseball team is off to a fast and solid start for the 2015 season, winning its first three games and, in the process, shutting out each opponent.

The Jays are currently halfway through a four-games tournament, the WGNO Classic, winning their first two games against West Ouachita (7-0) on Thursday evening at Zephyr Field, and then against Ruston (5-0) on Friday evening at Kirsch-Rooney.

Senior Myles Blunt pitched two hitless innings against Grace King and picked up his first win of the new season.

Against Ruston, senior third-baseman Scott Crabtree smacked a towering three-run home run — his first as a Blue Jay.

Jesuit finishes the WGNO Classic with a double-header on Saturday at Chalmette High School, opening against Belle Chasse at 1:30 p.m. and closing against Franklinton at 4 p.m.   

“The WGNO Tournament provides us with an opportunity to gauge where we are early in the season,” said Jesuit head coach Joey Latino. “The tournament provides great competition at some of the area’s finest facilities. Our pitching continues to be our main strength, but we are improving offensively and are deeper talent-wise than a year ago. Defensively, we are continuing to improve and are gradually becoming more solid in that area.”

In last Tuesday’s season opener, a non-district game against Grace King played at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium because John Ryan Stadium was still in soccer configuration, the Blue Jays scored 19 runs in the first inning. The game ended on the 10-run rule after the fifth inning. Final score: 30-0. The Jays had 23 hits, including three doubles by Dan Edmund (1B), who had five RBIs. Trent Forshag (C) and Jake Licciardi (DH) each had three hits that included a double. Scott Crabtree (3B) was 2-for-2, including a triple that scored two runs.

Senior pitcher Myles Blunt started for the Jays and picked up his first win of the season. Blunt threw two innings, senior Logan Hornung pitched one inning, and sophomore Davis Martin finished the last two innings. The pitching trio combined for a no-hitter.
