Forty Jesuit students, representing every grade level, participated in the Brother Martin Mu Alpha Theta State Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015.

Forty Jesuit students — representing all grade levels — competed in the Brother Martin Mu Alpha Theta State Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 17. The team earned an overall third place in interschool testing and finished in a first place tie for the overall Sweepstakes award.

Individual honors were awarded to the following: geometry students Garrett Crumb (first place), Michael Farrugia (second place), and Caleb Rogers (third place); analysis students Jose Cusco (first place) and John James (second place). Peter James (Algebra I) and Samy Amkieh (Algebra II) each earned an Honorable Mention award.

Second place team honors in the Math Bowl competition were awarded to the Algebra II team, comprised of Samy Amkieh, Christian Gonzalez, James Groos, and Jae Kwon; and to the analysis team, comprised of William Dowling, Chalon Fogarty, John James, and Steven Sellers.

The Algebra I/Geometry combined subject team comprised of Matthew LaCour, Matthew Vlosich, Michael Farrugia and Caleb Rogers placed first in Comp Math I, and the team comprised of Josef Ernst, Peter James, Garrett Crumb, and David Gravolet finished second.

The Algebra II/Analysis combined subject team comprised of Dane Castillo, Tommy Nguyen, Kenneth Krizan, and Harrison Millar finished in second place in Comp Math II, and the team comprised of Andre Nguyen, Trevor Roussel, Jose Cusco, and Anton Derbes finished third. 

Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school and junior college honorary mathematics club designed to meet the challenge of reaching out to our academically talented students and turning them on to mathematics. Members are students who have completed four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and in addition have completed or are enrolled in a fifth semester mathematics course, providing their mathematics work was done with distinction (minimum B average). The main focus of Mu Alpha Theta is the interaction of our chapter with those of other area schools. This is accomplished through monthly district meetings, local tournaments, and an annual state convention.
