Chris Pitre, a sophomore mid-fielder shown here playing against Shaw, scored the lone goal in Jesuit’s 1-0 shutout of Archbishop Rummel last Friday at John Ryan Stadium.

The Blue Jays shut out Archbishop Rummel, 1-0, Friday, Dec. 12 at John Ryan Stadium. The match was the varsity team’s home opener for the 2014-15 season.

The Jays were coming off a 10-0 win over Archbishop Shaw in a match held Wednesday, Dec. 10, across the river on the Eagles’ home field. Playing the Raiders, Jesuit faced a more challenging task.

Chris Pitre, a sophomore who starts in the mid-fielder’s position, knocked in the Jays’ only goal during the first half. Jesuit’s defense, with Charles Glass playing in the goalkeeper’s position for an injured Otto Candies, held the Raiders scoreless.

The Jays and Raiders always play a physical match and this one was no exception. While Jesuit took control of the match from the sound of the ref’s starting whistle until the very end, the Jays missed numerous opportunities to score and put the game away.

“We need to finish strong, and we are not doing that yet,” said Coach Hubie Collins.

The varsity team travels to Lake Charles this weekend (Friday and Saturday, Dec. 19-20) to participate in the Louisiana Showcase. The Jays will be playing some tough teams in St. Louis Catholic, Byrd, and St. Thomas More.

Following Christmas, the soccer Jays cross the Causeway to play in the St. Paul’s Holiday Tournament, scheduled Dec. 29 – 31.

On Saturday, Jan. 3, the Jays will host Shaw at John Ryan Stadium, at the same time, bidding a big Blue & White welcome to Jesuit alumni who played soccer during their days at Carrollton & Banks. In particular, the Alumni Soccer Reunion will feature Blue Jays who played on the 1995 and 2005 state championship teams. The event is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m.
