Galy’s Bat, Avrard’s Arm Lead Jays to a 2-1 Win Over Shaw

For the final district game of the season, against Archbishop Shaw at John Ryan Stadium, the gritty Blue Jays sure made it exciting. They made it a lot of other things: close, nerve-wracking, fun, impressive, head-scratching, crazy. And that’s just how the Jesuit fans felt.
In staking a 2-1 victory over Shaw on Wednesday, April 23, the Blue Jays didn’t win the District 9-5A title and they most likely will remain in the #3 spot in the coaches’ poll. But they did accomplish something: the Jays avenged their earlier 7-2 loss to the Eagles on the West Bank, a dismal game that turned out to be the team’s first district loss.

The Jays (26-5 overall; 8-2 in district) simply played better than Shaw and scored one more run than the Eagles. Steady pitching from Jesuit’s ace right-hander, C.J. Avrard, and Alex Galy accounting for three of the team’s eight hits certainly helped cement the win. Avrard struck out five Eagles and improved his record to 7-1. Galy singled twice and hit a double and was credited with Jesuit’s two RBIs.
The junior shortstop, however, wasn’t the only hitter. Dan Edmund (1B) swatted two singles, Blake Baker (2B) knocked a double, and Brandon Sequeira (3B) and Scott Crabtree (LF) each had a one-bagger. And credit catcher Trent Forshag for tagging an Eagle at the plate. Otherwise, oh never mind… the Jays won.
“The bottom line is you hold a team like Shaw to one run over seven innings and that’s a good job,” said Coach Joey Latino. “We were sloppy at times on defense and we need to clean up some things. We made some bad throws and in the playoffs, we won’t have second chances. One bad throw in the wrong spot and we’re home, we’re finished. We have to play clean baseball, fundamentally sound baseball, hard baseball. That’s what will carry us deep into the playoffs. We are close, but we are not there yet. We have work to do.”
The Blue Jays close out their regular season on Saturday, April 26 when they host South Terrebonne at John Ryan Stadium. First pitch is 1 p.m. Student and faculty IDs will not be accepted. Admission for adults is $5 and $3 for children (6-11).
