The Blue Jays refused to wallow in the self-pity so easily generated in the aftermath of their first district loss earlier this week to Archbishop Shaw.

No, it was not the way Jesuit wanted to end the first round of district games, with a 7-2 thumping by the Eagles.

When the Jays opened round two of district play against Holy Cross on Thursday, April 10 at UNO’s Maestri Field, they were a completely different Jesuit team than the one that imploded on the West Bank last Tuesday.

Focused and driven, Jesuit ignored the blustery winds, discarded adversity, and blew out the Tigers, 13-2, in a five-inning game that ended early because of the 10-run rule. The Jays had 13 hits to match the number of runs scored.

Alex Galy, the junior shortstop, went 3-for 4, including a bases-loaded double. Galy accounted for five RBIs while teammates Blake Baker (2B) and Nick Ray (DH) each had a pair of RBIs. Baker, a senior and the leadoff batter, had two hits, including a big triple. Ray, the strapping freshman who was the designated hitter in this game, smacked a double that drove in two runs.

Senior pitcher C.J. Avrard remains undefeated with a 6-0 record. Avrard pitched all five innings and struck out three Tigers. While he gave up eight hits, Avrard always managed to bust out of a jam with some help from his teammates.

The Blue Jays return to John Ryan Stadium on Saturday, April 12 for a double-header against the Saints of St. Louis Catholic, a Division 3 team in Lake Charles. The opening game’s first pitch is 2 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults; $3 for children (ages 6-11). School IDs and season passes will not be accepted at the gate.
